International Excellence Award for teachers in Early Childhood Education 2011/2012 Awardees

Joya Cash

Ms. Cash has over 10 years teaching experience and is currently a Grade 1 teacher at Oakes Field Primary School in Nassau, Bahamas. Three nominations were received for Ms. Cash, all describing her creativity in the classroom, her passion for excellence and her dedication to her students. She initiated the school's reading club to ensure that struggling students attain great competency in literacy and was elected teacher of the year in 2010 - 2011.

Aldith Stephens

A teacher for over 25 years, Mrs. Stephens has made her presence felt in every arena in which she engages and the results that ensue always among the highest standards. Her early years as a teacher began at Lucea Primary School where she taught Grade 6 students preparing for their common entrance examinations for high school entry. It was then that her exceptional abilities came to the fore as her students excelled academically and were well rounded as she engaged them in all genres of performing arts, achieving many gold medals in the JCDC's festival for the performing arts. Mrs. Stephens is currently a teacher at Esher Primary School. With the participation of her students, she has created a CD of songs to traditional Jamaican rhythms with the accompanying booklet entitled "Education Come Alive" to deliver lessons in English, Mathematics, Science and Social Studies.

Cloetha Walker

Mrs. Walker is currently a Grade 1 teacher I the Sepcial Education Unit at Hazard Primary School in May Pen, Clarendon, Jamaica, teaching students having a wide range of disabilities. Her innovative method of teaching make it easy for her students to learn concepts and skills in a fun-filled environment. Despite the absence of support from speech and language occupational therapists, Mrs. Walker has been successful in helping students develop their ability to speak and express their ideas as well as learn daily living skills such as how to feed themselves. The parents of these students consider her a "miracle worker". Mrs. Walker's effectiveness as an educator is evident through the outstanding results of the annual assessments by the Ministry of Education and in June 2010 was adjudged the Most Outstanding Teacher in the Unit.

Terry-Ann Wellington

Ms. Wellington has been a teacher at Gwen Neil's Basic School for the past three years. Gwen Neil's is located in a volatile community in Central Village, St. Catherine, Jamaica. She has not been daunted by the challenges she encounters on a daily basis but instead considers herself an agent of change to transform the lives of the children entrusted to her care. Some of the factors affecting the intellectual and social capanility of the children are hunger, poor personal hygiene, low self-esteem and irregular attendance a result of which has propelled Ms. Wellington to implement a savings program where parents contribute minimal cash on a daily basis. The accumulated funds are used to cover school fees, lunch and school supplies, causing a decline in absenteeism over time. Her philosophy is that everyone can reach their true potential if given the opportunity.
