THREE early childhood education teachers have been honoured by Heritage Education Funds International for their outstanding contribution to the sector.

The recipients of the 2013 Heritage International excellence awards for teaching in early childhood education are Alecia Sawyers, Vaz Preparatory; Dorette Clarke, Black River Primary & Infant; and Panceta Patrice Walker, St Aloysius Primary.

The Canada-based Heritage Education Funds International, through its agency in Jamaica, has since 1995 been helping parents to save for their children's tertiary education, dispensing over US$20.8 million in savings and educational assistance to subscribers and students.

The Heritage International excellence awards honour those making a special effort to enhance the learning experience of their young students. Awardees received a plaque and US$1,000 each.

At the awards presentation ceremony at the Terra Nova Hotel on October 7, Jason Maguire, president and CEO, said the three teachers stand tall among a group of high achievers and have a proud legacy of contribution to education and nation building.

"The foundation is delighted to pay tribute to these incredible teachers whose efforts are sometimes overlooked," he said.

Sawyers was hailed as a dedicated, diligent and creative teacher of over 25 years who holds qualifications in primary education, guidance and counselling and a master's in teaching from the Mico University College.

Clarke was recognised for going the extra mile for her students, giving extra lessons even to those who cannot afford to pay.

And Walker, an early childhood expert for over 25 years, lectures and assesses principals and teachers in early childhood education. The holder of a master's in education, she conducts workshops with parents and teachers on topics such as teamwork, lesson planning and learning styles.

Lyndie Headley, Heritage Jamaica agency director, congratulated the three awardees and clients of the company for contributing to early childhood education.
